Kehilaton: 01/09/10
This Shabbat is "HAZAK SHABBAT' - a special Shabbat where we honor Temple Beth Israel's chapter of HAZAK.
For those unfamiliar with HAZAK, it is the organization established by the USCJ (United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism) to provide programs and meet the needs of the mature members of USCJ's Conservative congregations.
Indeed, this is an especially appropriate weekend to honor HAZAK since, in reading Parashat Vayechi (which concludes the Book of Genesis), we observe how Jacob gives a final blessing to his children before passing on.
Jacob (a.k.a. "Israel") - in his Biblical time, set the tone for the future structure of all Jewish generations - all "B'nai Yisrael" - all of the "Children of Israel".
And today at Temple Beth Israel, it is our HAZAK members who, likewise, set the tone for the structure of our Temple by currently serving (or by having previously served) as: presidents of the Temple, Board members, and as other important synagogue volunteers.
So, it's not unusual that the name of this group is called HAZAK, which, in Hebrew, means "STRENGTH", and whose three starting letters key into...
Chet - Chochma: Wisdom,
Zayin - Zikna: Maturity, and
Kuf - Kadima: Looking forward
Yes, these are three great characteristics for all of us to strive for - and we dedicate one Shabbat a year to honoring these active HAZAK members who exhibit such great "action" and example!
So, when we rise at the conclusion of this Shabbat's Torah Portion to say "HAZAK, HAZAK, V'NITCHAZEK" and when we raise our cups at Kiddush following our services, let's all think of this special group and be reminded that "...the glory of children is their parents!" (Proverbs 17:6)
L'Chaim to HAZAK and Shabbat Shalom, |
