Dear Friends, "Go forth from your country, your birth place and your father’s house to the land that I will show you!" The above is the order that G-d gives Abraham at the start of this week’s parasha of Lech Lecha (Gen: 12). For a moment, imagine that you’re dreaming and suddenly hear a booming voice stating this order to you! How would you react?? Would you believe it’s G-d speaking? Would you want more details before acting? Would you want to start planning for a move? Or…would you think it’s just another nightmare and go back to sleep?! Fortunately for us as Jews, when Abraham got this call, he listened and, without any doubts or questions, he obeyed G-d and soon found himself directed to Canaan where he established residence and, most importantly, the new Jewish nation. Now, many of our commentators believed that the vagueness in G-d stating: "Go…to the land that I will show you…" – was actually part of a plan for testing and qualifying Abraham to become the founder of Judaism. In fact, Pirkei Avot (The Ethics of the Fathers) notes: "Our father Abraham was tested with ten trials and he withstood them all. This demonstrates our father Abraham’s great love for G-d." (Pirkei Avot 5:4) (Pirkei Avot further identifies Abraham’s first trial as relating to the above commandment from Lech-Lecha.) Indeed, Abraham teaches us a great love for G-d. And not just the kind of love expressed with words, but the kind reflected in ACTIONS! We’ve all heard: "Say little and do much", and these are exactly the words that best-describe the character of Abraham Avinu; Abraham, our first Patriarch. Yes, Abraham said very little in the Book of Genesis but, nonetheless, did very much for his generation and for us! Although we are not Abraham, we, at least, can read about his teachings and try to bring them into our 21st Century life!! Shabbat Shalom! |
