Kehilaton: 9/5/09

Dear Friends,

Last Sunday was a very significant day in the history of Temple Beth Israel, as it marked the start of our new
Religious Studies Program.

With much enthusiasm, students, teachers, new friends and old ones - all gathered together in celebration of this happy occasion.

We extend a hearty "Yeshar Kochaich" to Idit Cohen (our Director); and to Sonia Rice and Judy Roth (our teachers or "morot") on their efforts and their demonstrating to us that "true service" brings joy and gladness!

And speaking of happy occasions and joy and gladness, let's look a bit at what Jewish tradition has to say about these concepts...

We read in our Torah: "V'samachta B'chagecha...V'hayita Ach Sameach" - "You shall rejoice in your festivals...and have nothing but joy!" (Deuteronomy 16:14-15)

Now, if we pay close attention to our Jewish holiday cycle, we'll recognize that our agricultural-based holidays are times of "pure joy", that the Sabbath is a day of happiness, and that Rosh Chodesh (the new month) and Rosh Hashanah are times of happiness.

And, interestingly, even solemn and pensive holidays, such as Yom Kippur, have been associated with happiness. (See the Talmud, Ta'anit 26b: "There were no happier days during the year than Tu B' Av and Yom Kippur".)

The bottom line is that G-d offers us many opportunities to celebrate and be happy.

This Shabbat is no exception.

On this Shabbat of September 5th, we, together, celebrate Jeffrey Keller's Bar Mitzvah - that day when Jeffrey begins to take on the obligations and responsibilities of Jewish adulthood.

Jeffrey's Bar Mitzvah and the Keller family tradition of service to synagogue and community - also well-demonstrate that "true service" brings joy and gladness.

So, on Shabbat when we raise our cups for Kiddush in the presence of the Kellers and the whole congregation, let's say together, "L'Chayim - To Life, to a peaceful and joyful life!"

Shabbat Shalom!
