Kehilaton: 9/12/09

From the Desk of Rabbi Marcelo Bater
September 11/12, 2009   23 Elul 5769

Dear Friends,

We’ve always described Shabbat as a day of happiness and joy -- a day commanded-upon us to rest. However, this Shabbat we can’t help but be reminded of what happened eight years ago, on Sept. 11th, 2001 -- the day that changed the world.

I would like to share a short story...

In a small town, a group of townspeople constantly made fun of a person who was considered the village fool. That person was outwardly not very intelligent and worked for small pennies doing whatever he could.

Everyday, the people called the guy (the foolish one) to the bar where they got together, and asked him:

"Which of these two coins would you like? That big one has a value of $400 and that small one has a value of $2000." The guy always chose the big coin with the small value and when he did, everyone laughed.

One day, a by-stander called the foolish one aside and asked: "Don’t you realize that you’re always choosing the coin that has the small value?"

"I know, answered the guy. I’m not a fool. True, the smaller coin has a value five times more than the larger coin, but on the day that I pick up the smaller coin, the game will be over, and I won’t gain anymore coins!"

We can learn a number of important lessons from this story…

  1. The one who seems to be an idiot, is not necessarily one...

  2. The real fools were the people playing the game with "the foolish one"...

  3. and...

  4. If one is too ambitious, a source of income may stop!
Yes, the important thing is not what others think we are, but what we really are and what we think we are. Indeed, the greatest pleasure for an intelligent person is to "seem to be an idiot in front of an idiot who seems to be intelligent."

So, let’s understand that we are not idiots and that we must fight and condemn all kinds of terrorism, injustice, anti-Semitism and intolerance. If we don’t, then who will?!

In the blessed memory of all the innocent people who died on Sept. 11th, 2001…

Shabbat Shalom!
