ISRAEL SUPPORT

TBI Supports Israel!!

On January 9th, 2009/13 Tevet 5769, the Leadership Council of Conservative Judaism (LCCJ) released the following statement on its hopes for peace and safety in a time of war:

The Conservative/Masorti Movement supports the State of Israel, its government and military, in its current operations to protect the citizens of Israel's southern region and offers our prayers and material assistance to its soldiers and their families. We lament Hamas’ unrelenting and finally intolerable barrage of rocket fire on Israel’s cities and civilians. We pray that a leadership of the Palestinian people emerges that will honor a verifiable and monitored cease fire and negotiate an enduring peace. We pray for peace.

We particularly commend the many efforts on the part of our colleagues in the Masorti Movement and Schechter Institute to provide substantive and spiritual support for soldiers and civilians in areas affected by rocket fire.

When the Holy Blessed One created the first human being, G-d showed the human the Garden of Eden, and said: “See My works, how fine and excellent they are! All that I have created, I created for you. Consider this and do not destroy My world: for if you do, there is no one to set it right.” Ecclesiates Rabbah 7:13

We believe that the task of humanity is to preserve G-d’s Creation and for people to live cooperatively.

Even a mighty hero, once the arrow leaves one’s hand, one can no longer make it come back. Mekhilta of Rabbi Ishmael, Tractate Shirah §4.

We pray for a speedy and effective end to this conflict. We pray for minimal losses.

Whenever destruction of the wicked takes place, there is grief for them above. Zohar Bereshit, I:57b

We know that G-d mourns losses on all sides. Saddened by this war, we dedicate ourselves to help Israel speedily fulfill its mission to live with security and in lasting peace with its neighbors.

But every person shall sit under their grapevine or fig tree with no one to disturb them. For it was the Lord of Hosts who spoke. Micah 4:4

So may it be G-d’s will.

On Sunday, January 4th, Temple Beth Israel joined with the Broward County Jewish Federation in a rally for Israel held adjacent to the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach.  The following update/announcement was associated with that event:

ISRAEL UPDATE
December 31, 2008

Dear Friends,

Since this past weekend when Israel was compelled to launch a defensive military action to protect her people after months, if not years, of unprovoked rocket attacks from Hamas, the Jewish Federation of Broward County has taken several steps to demonstrate our solidarity with the Israeli people and to inform the community and the media about the situation taking place in Gaza and along Israel's southern border.

Steps taken so far in support of Israel:

• We have issued a statement to the local media of solidarity with the Israeli people, and a condemnation of Hamas' aggression.
• Posted the same letter on our website
www.JewishBroward.org .
• Also on our website, we've posted links to our overseas partner agencies JAFI and JDC whose websites contain breaking news and updates about on-the-ground humanitarian actions they are taking to assist residents of the Israeli cities and towns located near the border, and experiencing rocket attacks.
• We have also posted links to Jewish and news organizations disseminating accurate information.
• Our Community Relations Committee (CRC) has been working in coordination with established organizations to encourage members of Congress to make statements in support of Israel.
• Our CRC has distributed talking points from the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) about the current situation to our community Rabbis and local Agency Executives in case they are contacted by the media for comment, or receive questions from their constituents.
• We continue to monitor local and national events responding to this crisis.

Israel has taken great lengths to avoid confrontation of this sort, but was left with no other way to ensure that its civilians would be able to live free of fear of rocket fire, after Israeli population centers in southern Israel have been the target of over 4,000 rockets, as well as thousands of mortar shells, fired by Hamas and other organizations since 2001. Rocket attacks increased by 500 percent after Israel withdrew completely from the Gaza Strip in August 2005. During an informal six-month lull, some 215 rockets were launched at Israel

Today, we stand with Israel. We support her efforts to prevent attacks on the people of Israel. We appreciate the clear and forceful expressions of support from the United States government and urge other countries to stand with Israel in her fight against terrorism.

And we will keep the soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces in our thoughts and prayers as they defend the State of Israel.

A rally in support of Israel is taking place this Sunday, January, 4 at 11:00 AM, adjacent to the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach (
http://www.holocaustmmb.org ).  Parking for rally participants will be at the Miami Beach High School about 1 block north from the Memorial.  Your presence is important.  Many people are expected.   Bring Israeli flags.  Bring signs that express solidarity with Israel.  Bring your friends.  It is important to have a huge turnout of supporters of Israel, and representation from Broward County.

And, please visit our website
www.JewishBroward.org regularly for current information, and ways to speak out on Israel's behalf.

Sincerely,

Eric B. Stillman
President and CEO
Jewish Federation of Broward County
